Pajaa

PAJAA, 49, is Nok’s close weaving friend, a jolly and sensible woman, who juggles weaving, farming and raising her grandchild. Although not to Nok’s level of artistry, Pajaa is one of our few weavers capable of doing ‘mijai’ motifs in ikat. She is also skilled in float weave.

Pajaa has an unofficial advisory role in Sawang Boran as her quick intelligence readily understands the many issues on our agenda (from dye-stuff procurement planning to ethical concerns, from financial issues to collective decision-making…). Isan villagers are not accustomed to participatory ownership along the model that Sawang Boran seeks to establish, so Pajaa often jumps in as facilitator.
